                <text>Political, cultural, and linguistic borders have shifted significantly since the end of the Cold War, but physical infrastructure continues to divide Europe along the Cold War era political borders. The map showing the track gauges of different train system in Europe is particularly revealing of the “embeddedness” of infrastructural systems, which remain stubborn markers of political borders. A proposed cross border cooperation project in the Republic of Moldova, funded by the European Commission, seeks to replace Soviet gauge tracks with European gauge tracks. For many Moldovans this proposed project holds symbolic significance, because it attests to Moldova’s turn toward Europe.</text>
