Rivers and imperial expansion. Rivers and Ethno-linquistic space. Ethno-linguistic map of Imperial Russia
Description
An account of the resource
My favorite aspect of this map is its representation of the Russian population that stretches into Siberia and the far east along rivers, depicting Russian colonization. It also reveals various features that were excluded from the map but revealed by the ethnic patterns: such as the steppe/black earth belt (geography/ecology) and the path of the trans Siberian railroad (industrialization, geopolitics)
I think this map could be a useful tool for discussion in an undergraduate section. It presents a great stimulus for conversation even among students with little or no Russian language ability: Can students date it without seeing the date? Where are the Belorussians and Ukrainians (and why are they "missing")? How is it an ethno-linguistic map (and how is it not)? What is the significance of the dots representing the Jewish population? What does the fact that it was published by Ivan Sytin imply about the readership? (discuss the context of increased literacy and reading public). Inorodtsy.

Ethnographic map of Eurasia
Description
An account of the resource
A large full color map of Europe and Asia showing the ethnographic distribution of people with an accompanying chart.;
Of the 90 plates, 75 are maps. 1st ed 2nd state,1845/1848 on titles, 1849 on some maps in volume one. 1st edition, 1st state was 1845/1848, with no maps dated later than 1848 (rare - WH). Second edition 1852 (see our copy). This is considered the first comprehensive physical atlas of the world. Robinson: "Berghaus' Physikalischer Atlas was a monumental achievement, bringing together an enormous amount of information about the physical geography of the earth and encompassing many more subjects than had been treated in the numerous smaller atlases that had been produced since the 1820's." In two volumes, the first dated 1845, the second 1848. A.K. Johnston's Physical Atlas of 1848 was based on this work. Maps are hand painted in full and outline color. Atlas volumes are bound in green cloth covered boards stamped in gold with "Berghaus' Physik. Atlas 90 Karten. I Band." and "... II Band." for volumes I and II, respectively. The spines read "Berghaus. I." and "Berghaus. II."

Narrative "Score"
Description
An account of the resource
An interactive graph, or "score," of Nabokov's short story "A Guide to Berlin." The interactive "score" of Nabokov's "A guide to Berlin" shows the progression of the narrative verb by verb in each chapter (left to right, horizontal axis) and the fluctuations of time across past-present-future (bottom to top, vertical axis), representing the work of memory and imagination, and the interconnectedness of time in this text.
This map also captures the narrator's movement in space. The locations—home, streetcar, zoo, and pub—are color coded, showing that the narrative generally parallels the linearity of physical movement (left to right), but that it also undermines it a little, as the first groups of dots indicates.

This schematic representation of the narrative movement of Nabokov's "A Guide to Berlin" shows the temporal complexity of the narrative. Each block (color-coded by the location) represents a small textual segment, in which the time of action was deemed to be consistent throughout. The diagram makes visible the instances of time-mirrorring, of parallel temporal lines meeting, of synchronicity of time, and shows the narrator's physical movement (in space and in narrative) as well (left to right).
