The use of teargas by the Hong Kong Police is widely credited with intensifying the Occupy Central Movement. According to numerous news articles, dramatic images of teargas being fired at protesters – the vast majority of whom were students – generated public sympathy and altered the tone of the Occupy Movement. The imagery is jittering: a public intersection, marked by international hotels, corporate offices, and traffic gridlock, suddenly resembled a war zone.

Benny Ta Yiu-ting, Associate Professor of Law at Hong Kong University, is widely credited with sparking the Occupy Central campaign in January 2013. Tai has frequently commented that the current Occupy Central movement, which has since spread well beyond the “Central” neighborhood of Hong Kong, has expanded well beyond his initial expectations, leading to significant organizational challenges.

Known as 'Umbrella Man', this public art installation has emerged as something of a mascot for the pro-democracy student movement in Hong Kong. Having used umbrellas to shield themselves from teargas, umbrellas have taken on a unique and symbolic meaning for the Occupy Central movement. The statue was erected at a protest site overnight and was designed by a 22 year old student known only as 'Milk'. Comparisons have been draw with the 'Goddess of Democracy' statue that was erected in Tiananmen Square before the government crackdown there in 1989.
