Title

Mrs. Lechtmann visiting woman's ward

Subject

Polish Medical Mission

Description

Mrs. Tonia Lechtman was the fourth member of the team, and was actually in charge of putting the team together from Switzerland, where Noel Field was based in 1944. Her husband had fought in the International Brigade that fought against Franco in Spain, and was interned in a camp in the South of France. Having taken a course on social work offered by the Unitarian Service Committee, Tonia Lechtman worked closely with patients and local community members. Due to her Communist background / sympathies, she facilitated much of the exchanges between USC and the Polish authorities of the provisional government.
